Xiaomi Mi 8 Review: Bigger FullView Notched Display, Dual Rear Cameras, and 3D Facial Recognition

Xiaomi Mi 8 smartphone has been released, along with 2 other editions, in 8 countries worldwide. The flagship device will be available on China from the 5 June, with the SE following on the 8 June, and the Explorer (Transparent) Edition, which date is announced yet. 

The smartphone features a 6.21-inches with 19:9 large screen and resolution of 1080x2248 pixels. Design-wise, it is composed of high-quality glass and aluminum materials. It really looks a premium smartphone device, similar to Apple iPhone X. And it has a notch too, just like Apple’s flagship device.

The Mi 8 mobile phone runs MIUI 10 based Android version 8.1 (Oreo) operating system. It is powered by Octa-core processor, clocked at 2.2 GHz of speed and has Adreno 630 GPU. Moreover, the premium handset supports 2 Nano SIMs at a time and packs a battery capacity of 3300mAh. For high-level photography, the smartphone has dual 12MP lenses on the back with 3x digital zoom, dual-tone dual-LED flash and face detection features. Best of all, you will get AI features with its primary camera. On the front, users get the highest quality 20MP large selfie camera with 1080p video recording and lots of exciting features.  

This mobile phone comes with three storage variants along with 6GB of RAM that is not expandable. The connectivity options in the smartphone include Hotspot, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, DLNA, GPS, NFC, and 4G. 

Xiaomi Mi 8 Release Date and Availability

The Xiaomi Mi 8 official release date is set for 31 May 2018. Initially, the Xiaomi flagship device will be released in 8 countries including India. And you will be able to pre-order the device from its official release. Actual shipment will start on 5th of June, though. Xiaomi Mi 8 release date in Australia has announced.

The manufacturer doesn’t usually sell and promote its mobile phones officially in the UK but it will do soon. And it is more likely that the new Mi 8, previously known as Mi 7, will be promoted widely throughout the UK along with its other editions.


Xiaomi Mi 8 price for standard variant 6GB RAM+64GB is Yuan 2699 ($421). The 6GB RAM+128GB variant costs Yuan 2999 ($471),while the 6GB RAM+256GB storage models costs Yuan 3299 ($520). 

Xiaomi Mi 8 price in Australia will be approx. AU$555 for 6GB RAM+64GB variant. For 6GB RAM+128GB and 6GB RAM+256GB variants, it will cost you around AU$620 and AU$686 respectively.

Design and Display

Xiaomi Mi 8 mobile phone comes with a 2.5 curved glass. It includes a 7000 series aluminum frame. In short, the device featuring a unique combination of glass and metal design. The Xiaomi device continues to have a fingerprint reader at the back, just like other top-rated flagships.  Most importantly, you will be able to get the new Mi 8 in four exciting coloring options including white, blue, gold and black. 

The great flagship featuring an impressive 6.21’’ FHD+ AMOLED display with 2248x1080 pixels of resolution. With having Full HD+ resolution, it also offers a 88.5% screen-to-body ratio. The aspect ratio of the device is 18.7: 9 and up to 600 nits brightness. Xiaomi Mi 8 display looks crisp and vibrant and is paired with stunning viewing angles ensuring a unique visual experience while watching HD videos and playing games.

Xiaomi Mi 8 comes with a notched display, similar to iPhone X. And it looks like Xiaomi is following its competitors i.e. OnePlus, Honor, etc. with notch hide feature. Huawei P20 Pro, OnePlus 6, and Honor 10, etc. also support this option. 

The Xiaomi Mi 8 also offering 3D face recognition and 3D AR emojis just like Apple’s iPhone X Animoji. And the manufacturer claims that the Face Unlock feature will work even in the dark. In addition to this, the Face Unlock can’t be fooled by a video or photo of the person, thanks to its infrared sensor.


As expected, Xiaomi Mi 8 is powered by an Octa-core Snapdragon 845 chipset along with 6 GB of powerful RAM to deliver smooth and flawless performance even when having extensive memory apps and graphics-rich games. The Mi 8 is also efficient enough to control your multitasking needs without showing a sign of lag.

According to the manufacturer, it has got an all-time Antutu benchmark score of 300000 plus on the Mi 8. But the benchmark score is not about the actual performance of the device. 


For photographers, Xiaomi Mi 8 is definitely a pleasure as the device is going to offer AI based dual lens 12MP+12MP camera configuration which is paired with a dual-LED flash for getting perfect results even in low light. Firstly, it was said that the device will be loaded with a 20MP+16MP dual-lens camera, but now these specs have been wrong.

The back camera offers wide-angle, telephoto, 4-axis OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus) which adds stability to your image. The wide-angle lens has the f/1.8 aperture, whereas the telephoto lens offers f/2.4 aperture.  On the other hand, the Mi 8 also provides a Studio Lighting photography feature that is powered by AI, according to the company.

Xiaomi Mi 8 device also includes a top-class 20MP front-face camera with f/2.0 large aperture, as well as AI Portrait Selfies. However, the company has also included the notch with other sensors too for securing the Face Unlock. 

The MIUI 10 will depend on AI to boost the 'Bokeh' features in the camera. Portrait mode will work on single and dual cameras and on the Selfie shooter. It will also depend on Artificial Intelligence to know which apps are used more by the phone user. 

According to DxOMark, the Mi 8 device got 105 points for photo capabilities and 99 overall, handsomely beating the Apple iPhone X by a few points. On overall scores, the Xiaomi Mi 8 loses out to the HTC’s U12+, Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, and Huawei’s P20and four-camera P20 Pro.


Xiaomi Mi 8 is powered by a non-removable Li-Po 3300mAh long-lasting battery which efficient enough to remain all day with moderate use. The battery comes with fast charging support enables you to charge your phone up to 50% just in just a few minutes. And best of all, it is the second Xiaomi phone to include 7.5W wireless charging.

Platform and Connectivity

As for connectivity, Xiaomi Mi 8 is bundled with a bunch of connectivity options such as 4G, dual SIM support, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, NFC, GPS, Bluetooth 4.2 and a micro USB Type-C port. The smartphone runs MIUI 10 based on the Android 8.1 Oreo operating system.

Other Features

The Xiaomi mobile phone also comes with dual-frequency GPS. According to the manufacturer, it will eliminate interference from buildings and minimizes signal delays, and promises improved navigation using the device.  Mi 8 will support NFC payments in its China too. Mi 8 also offers a 3D beauty feature for better photography which is also backed by AI. Xiaomi also claims that it is the first mobile device ever to use dual-frequency GPS, which is dedicated to providing more accurate location data.
