Asus ZenFone Ares Review: Snapdragon 821, 8GB RAM, AR/VR Features, and More

Asus ZenFone Ares mobile phone featuring a 5.7-inch touchscreen Super-AMOLED display with 1440x2560 pixels of resolution. It is powered by Snapdragon 821 based quad-core processor. It has 8GB of solid RAM and 128GB of onboard storage that can be expanded up to 2TB using a separate microSD card. In terms of camera tech, the new ZenFone Ares includes a 23MP primary camera on the back and an 8MP front shooter for selfies. The smartphone runs on Android 7.0 out of the box and is powered by a 3300mAh capacity non-removable battery. With all, it has 170 grams of weight.

The Asus ZenFone Ares is a dual SIM phone that accepts Nano-SIM and Nano-SIM. Connectivity options include, but are not limited to, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, 3G, 4G, and GPS, etc. Sensors on the phone include the Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor, Accelerometer, and Gyroscope.

Asus ZenFone Ares Release Date, Availability, and Prices

Asus ZenFone Ares has been released recently on 15 June 2018 in its hometown. Asus Zenfone Ares global Release date is still unknown. Asus Zenfone Ares release date in Australia is also unknown. But it will be available on Sale in Australia after its global release.

Asus Zenfone Ares price is TWD 9990 in the Taiwanese market, which is considered to be cheap as compared to Asus Zenfone AR. Asus Zenfone Ares price in Australia is not available yet. If you are considering the device from India, you will need to spend almost INR 22550.

Design and Display

Asus Zenfone Ares smartphone device comes with a 5.7’’ large Quad HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440x2560 pixels. It has an aspect ratio of 16:9, which may sound strange and old as the newer displays these days come with an 18:9 or even 19:9 bigger screen ratio. The Zenfone Ares display offers an advanced Tru2life technology that allows users to experience VR (Virtual Reality) on the device. Its beautiful touchscreen supports up to 10 fingerprints at a time and supports gloves mode as well.

Hardware and Storage

The new Zenfone Ares is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 system on a chip, which is well supported by 8GB of highly powerful RAM. It comes with an inbuilt storage capacity of 128GB and supports up to 2TB of storage expansion via a microSD card. According to few rumours, the global version will offer more storage variants.

The phone’s hardware is expected to be compatible with Google's ARCore technology.

Operating System

This mobile phone by Asus runs on Android 7.0 Nougat version with a customised ZenUI 3.0 on top of the device, which also sounds ancient and out-of-fashion as these days all the latest phones are coming with at-least Android 8.0 version. It can be the brand’s tactic to cut-down the cost of the device to some extent.


When it comes to its cameras, Zenfone Ares packs a 23MP high-quality rear camera with an aperture rate of f/2.0. The AR-enabled camera comprises a 6P Largan lens with the 3x optical zoom feature. Other camera features are related to motion tracking, depth sensing features, OIS, laser autofocus, and phase detection for getting an outstanding photography experience. At the front, it includes an 8MP camera for taking impressive selfies with an aperture of f/2.0.

Moreover, the shooters comes with Pixel Master 3.0 camera mode which supports an extensive range of features including Low Light Mode, HDR Mode, Super Resolution Mode that enables photo shoot with up to 4X massive resolution, Panorama Selfie Mode, Time Rewind Mode, Smart Remove Mode, depth of field mode, GIF Animation Mode, All Smiles Mode, Slow Motion Mode, and Panorama Mode, etc.


The device features 3300mAh Li-Polymer non-removable battery with Quick Charge 3.0. According to the manufacturer, the battery has the ability to charge the device up to 60% in just 39 minutes, thanks to its incredible BoostMaster Fast Charging technology.


The Asus Zenfone Ares also includes a SonicMaster 3.0 Hi-Res 384 kHz audio decoder along with DTS headphone with 7.1 channel support. Due to this, you will experience high-quality audio quality with wider bass and clarity.
