Design and Build
Frankly, it’s not a normal laptop as in order to fit a large graphics card and quite enough cooling to make it function properly, Asus has had to play around where major parts of the laptop sit. The lid’s texture is brushed in 2 opposing directions which give it an eye-catching look as compared to an average laptop.
But how portable is that? As compared to Alienware 15, it’s highly portable. It’s 1.3KG heavier and 50% thicker and only 17.9mm thick – if you want something thinner, you should have a look at Asus ROG Zephyrus S which is the thinnest gaming laptop in the world. The panel is made of plastic and slightly flex-happy which is making it seem out of place in any laptop at that price tag.
Keyboard and Trackpad
Both Trackpad and keyboards work seamlessly and despite the choice of non-mechanical key switches, it’s comfortable to type and game on. There are 2 physical buttons below which are a joy to use and the non-mechanical RGB keyboard is entirely customized via Asus’s ROG Aura Core software.
The position of the Trackpad, on the other hand, replicates the position of a mouse and if you tap the Trackpad/calculator button above the Trackpad, it’ll replace a Trackpad with a touch-based number pad.
The Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 comes with four USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI 2.0 video output, a 3.5mm headphone/mic jack and a Type-C USB 3.1 Gen 2 Thunderbolt. And for wireless, there is integrated 802.11 ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1. Asus is giving a USB to Ethernet adapter in the box which is mandatory for low-latency gaming.
The exceptional performance of Zephyrus comes at a price – in short, a very high price. The Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 Price in Australia starts from AU$3659-3699. It’s indeed more as compared to any 15-inches gaming laptop – especially considering an increasingly more economical model like Gigabyte SabrePro 15 which set users back around AU$1840-2249.
